FoodSaver FSMSSY0200 MealSaver Compact Vacuum-Sealing System

Very handy device
I'm really pleased with the Meal Saver. I looked at the high-end models in the FoodSaver line, but the cost of the machine plus the cost of the plastic sealing film was more than I was willing to spend. The hand-held units (FreshSaver) didn't look like it would be very effective. The Meal Saver is the perfect middle ground.

The manufacturer claims the Meal Saver has the same suction power as the Food Saver. I can't verify that, but the suction power seems to be pretty good.

I'm especially pleased with how compact it is. Very easy to store, unlike the FoodSaver which takes up a lot of counter or shelf space.

I use this mainly with the adapter for sealing Mason jars to store coffee beans (FoodSaver T03-0023-01 Wide-Mouth Jar Sealer ). While it technically is not compatible with it, it will work if you press the suction cup tightly against the mason jar adapter. Wetting the rubber end...

Only ok.
So, it works. I wanted to replace a old Reynolds battery powered sealer and was to cheap to buy the real thing. It pulls a good vacuum and will properly evacuate a bag. But I have found it can take a lot of messing around to get it to work. Opening and cleaning the bag zip is very common. So it takes much longer than it should to seal up a few things. I believe most of the problem is caused by the bags themself however and it does good on containers the first time. I have some Reynolds bags that work much better than their bags.

Great customer service
I received this for Christmas having initially asked for the hand held version. I'm glad I got this one because I won't be feeding it batteries and I anticipate using it a lot since I shop in bulk and cook once a month for freezer storage. However, the retractable vacuum tube on the unit is a bit touchy. The first time I used mine, I pulled the tube out too far and wasn't able to get it to retract at all. Since I was planning to keep it in the box, I decided it wasn't that big a deal since the unit still functioned as it should. However, I decided to call customer service in case they had some tips on fixing it. I was connected very quickly to someone who determined that it was likely the tube would not retract again and she immediately set up a warranty replacement that was shipped that same day. I asked if they wanted me to ship the first one back and she said no. So, now I'll have two. I have only used the bags with the sealer and I haven't experienced any of the problems...
