All Clad Electric Induction Burner

Almost perfect with design flaws
I received the All-Clad induction burner from Williams-Sonoma.com a few days ago. I was delighted to finally experience the induction cooking. The unit is very attractive in design and finish. It is substantial but it is easy to move around. It has a well lit display, actual buttons to push and a dial to turn to select menus, manual modes and set the timer. The variety of controls is excellent. There are three choices! One is preset. You select a cooking program by pushing the "MENU" button from Melt to Sear, the total of 7 (seven) choices. There are two manual modes. One is description mode from EX LOW to HIGH (6 settings). The second manual mode gives a range from 1 to 10.
I used manual mode 1 in EX LOW to cook rice in a 2.5-qt LeCreuset pot. First, I boiled liquid (chicken broth) using "MENU" option "BOIL", and then I switched to EX-LOW using the manual mode. The switch to manual mode was instant. There was nothing to turn off, just to press on the "MODE" button. On EX LOW,...

Basically good, but flawed
This unit looks like it is very well made and is quite attractive, but also quite chunky and a bit higher than other models I have seen. The overall impression is of a robust, professional product. I can't comment on the reliability, because I ran it for about 10 minutes before returning it.

I had three main problems with it:

1. It looks like it has a knob for setting the power level, but in fact, it is a switch. From other reviews, I knew it was not continuously variable, but I had nevertheless assumed that if I turned the knob half-way through its range I would get half-power. In fact, to increase power you twist it to the right and it increases by one step. To increase another step, return it to its home position (it is spring loaded) and twist to the right again. Alternatively, twist it to the right and hold it in that position. After a second or two it starts counting up. To reduce power you follow the same procedure, but twist to the left. For me, this is...

The Portable Induction Cooktop for Bachelors, College Students, & Grandma
Just got it today from another website cheaper. All Clad Induction cooktop is an impressive portable jewel for about two hundred dollars. Previous comments giving negative reviews about this cooktop have been overly exaggerated & critical for an item at this low price.

It took me about 4 minutes to boil 1 Quart of water. There are soft, background noise from the fan but not as obnoxious as the ventilator fan or AC fan. Overall, the item is well built with quality stainless steel & ceramic glass surface. I used it mainly for "quick browning of onions or meats" outdoor to prevent stenching up the house. I also use it for "hot pot" at dinner table, boiling eggs, boiling water for coffee, or even prepping up quick breakfast while traveling on trips or vacations. Compatible Calphalon stainless induction cooking pots & pans are available at pretty cheap prices. This cooktop will probably last a long time for me as I don't abuse it.
The size is a bit chunky comparing...
